BL Manhwa vs Yaoi Manga: What's the Difference?
April 20, 2026
If you're new to the Boys Love genre, you might be confused by all the different terms. Let's break it down.
Manhwa (Korean) Manhwa refers to Korean comics. BL manhwa is Boys Love content from Korea. It's read left to right (unlike Japanese manga) and is commonly published in a vertical scroll format on platforms like Webtoon and Lezhin Comics. Korean BL has a very distinct art style — often softer, more romantic, and with detailed character designs.
Manga / Yaoi (Japanese) Yaoi is the traditional Japanese term for Boys Love manga. It's read right to left. Japanese BL covers everything from sweet romance (shounen-ai) to more mature content (yaoi). Artists like Harada and Natsume Isaku are fan favorites.
Manhua / Danmei (Chinese) Danmei is Chinese Boys Love, typically adapted from web novels. Stories like "The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation" (MDZS) and "Heaven Official's Blessing" (TGCF) started as novels before getting manhua (comic) adaptations. Chinese BL tends toward epic fantasy settings.
Which Should You Start With? If you want something easy to access and visually stunning, start with Korean manhwa on Webtoon. If you want deep storytelling, try Chinese danmei. For classic romance tropes, Japanese BL manga is the way to go.
